EDUCATOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Join the Jackie Robinson Museum and Brooklyn Public Library’s Center for Brooklyn History for a special two-part professional learning opportunity that will introduce Jackie Robinson as an athlete, activist, citizen, businessman, and family man and explore Robinson’s legacy as a champion for equality, on and off the field.

CTLE credit provided for educators who participate in both sessions.

Note: This is a two-part PD. Registrants will be automatically registered for both April 29 at the Jackie Robinson Museum and May 5 at the Center for Brooklyn History, each from 4pm to 6pm. 4 CTLE credits will be issued at the end of the second session.

Session 1: Jackie Robinson Museum, April 29, 4-6PM

During Session 1 at the Museum (75 Varick Street, lower Manhattan), join an interactive exhibition tour, learn about the program offerings, and try out student-facing activities that are part of the Museum’s popular field trip programs.

Session 2: Center for Brooklyn History, May 5, 4-6PM

In Session 2 at the Center for Brooklyn History (128 Pierrepont Street, Brooklyn Heights), educators will encounter Jackie Robinson-related artifacts in the Othmer Library reading room, acquire practical teaching techniques, and practice hands-on primary source work.

Light refreshments served at each session. Free registration available via the Center for Brooklyn History.

Barrier Breaker: Jackie Robinson and the Activism of Professional Athletes
Join the NYC DOE Department of Social Studies and Civics and Jackie Robinson Museum Education Department for a special professional learning opportunity. This interactive workshop will allow participants to examine some of the Civics for All curricular resources including the brand-new comic Barrier Breaker #1! Participants will have an opportunity to tour the museum’s exhibitions and discuss how to integrate resources from the museum’s collection into lessons. The Department of Social Studies and Civics will model classroom strategies on using comics in the classroom and lessons on baseball history.

This professional learning session is open to all NYC DOE Educators, but will be most aligned with middle and high school instruction.
